Anaerobic or Aerobic Bioremediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons: Choosing and Using the Right Electron Acceptor for Your Site

Numerous retail fuel stations and fuel terminals across the United States have existing petroleum hydrocarbon plumes from former leaks. Although hydrocarbons are amenable to active remediation systems such as air sparge and soil vapor extraction, many sites can be addressed more sustainably by utilizing existing, or supplied, microorganisms.  Both aerobic and anaerobic microbes are capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons. This presentation will examine indicators from site conditions that can be utilized to select the most cost-effective electron acceptor to stimulate native groundwater bacteria.  Following these decision factors, design considerations to stimulate enhanced sulfate reduction or supply oxygen for aerobic biodegradation will be presented.
